When it comes to tiling in a kitchen, there’s a lot to think about. The tiles on both the floor and walls can really define your kitchen and the type of look and feel it offers.
From limestone tile flooring providing a rustic farmhouse feel to black and white patterned tile offering the look of a serious kitchen, kitchen tiles can really play a part in the decor of a kitchen.
On the walls that’s especially the case, and every year we see new trends taking shape. That’s certainly been the case in 2024, with the following kitchen tile styles right on trend…
Subway Tiles
Subway tiles provide a timeless appeal that are inspired by the New York City subway stations in the early 20th century. The designs of subway stations have always been interesting and the rectangular tiles feature a simple yet elegant design that translate perfectly into the kitchen.
This year, they’re experiencing a real resurgence and homeowners are embracing the new variations in size, colour and texture. Well suited to a classic brick pattern or herringbone and chevron layouts, they can add a touch of elegance to any kitchen.
Large Format Tiles
A popular choice in the modern kitchen, large format tiles offer a sleek and seamless aesthetic that creates a sense of openness and space. The oversized tiles measure 12 inches or larger typically and can create a minimalist and contemporary feel.
You can pick up these tiles in porcelain, ceramic and natural stone, all offering a different look and feel. These tiles are great for flooring, as well as countertops and backsplashes to really elevate a modern kitchen.
Patterned Tiles
Making a bolder statement in kitchens is becoming more popular, and can add a real essence of your personality into a space. They are much more intricately designed, with many offering vibrant colours, geometric patterns and floral motifs.
Moroccan, Mediterranean and Art Deco inspired designs are proving particularly popular at the moment and tiles in these styles can provide focal points on feature walls and on backsplashes. Mixing and matching can add an even more playful feel, while you can use patterned tiles more subtly and integrate them into neutral backdrops.
Textured Tiles
Textured tiles add more depth and dimension to kitchen designs, providing a more sensory experience. This type of tile often features raised or embossed patterns, as well as different textures and finishes to create more visual interest on feature walls, island cladding and backsplashes.
Terrazzo Tiles
Finally, terrazzo tiles are making a comeback in a big way this year. They are made of a composite of marble, quartz, granite or glass chips mixed in with cement or resin. This creates a durable and versatile tile that is perfect for the kitchen.
They’re available in all manner of colours and patterns these days, and can be used on countertops, walls, backsplashes and even flooring. Muted tones like grey, beige or white are most commonly used, but you can opt for the bolder navys, emeralds and blushes for a more contemporary feel.
