A new study reveals that Nebraska has the fifth-highest rate of senior driver fatalities during Thanksgiving Month (November) in the United States.
The research by Florida-based Personal Injury lawyer Blakeley Law Firm analyzed the data for senior driver fatalities in November from 2019 to 2023 for each U.S. state via the NHTSA database. Average November fatality rates per 100,000 residents aged 65+ were calculated to identify the states where older drivers face the highest risk on the road during the Thanksgiving travel period.
Nebraska ranks fifth in November senior driver fatalities, with 2.01 deaths per 100,000 residents aged 65+. That is about 65% above the national average of 1.22 deaths per 100,000 residents. During 2019–2023, the Cornhusker State’s senior population, 322,596, recorded an average of 6.5 annual November fatalities. The state’s deadliest year was 2023, with 7 deaths, while 2020 recorded the lowest with 1.
