Zhang Yufei Defends China’s Integrity, Responds to Doping Allegations

Despite battling both a fever and her menstrual cycle, Zhang Yufei clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 200-meter butterfly at the Paris Olympics, cementing her status as a leading figure in Chinese swimming with a total of seven Olympic medals. In the post-race press conference, she firmly addressed persistent doping allegations against Chinese athletes, questioning why American swimmers like Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, despite their exceptional performances, have never faced similar scrutiny.

With other medalists needing to participate in relay races, the press conference became a solo session for Zhang. Foreign media raised concerns about whether frequent doping checks, resulting from past food contamination incidents involving Chinese swimmers, had affected their performance. Zhang responded that the number of checks has increased for athletes worldwide, emphasizing that cooperation with these checks is a duty for all top athletes.

Despite multiple clarifications from both the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regarding the food contamination incidents, some Western media continued to pursue the issue. Zhang stressed that the innocent have nothing to hide and that they should not bear the burden of already resolved matters. She also mentioned that false reports from certain foreign websites have troubled her, but she is more concerned about the potential doubts cast on her teammates and the audience regarding their training and competition abilities.

Zhang Yufei’s experience highlights the double standards employed by Western countries in treating Chinese athletes. Despite repeated clarifications from FINA and WADA, Western media persistently clings to these allegations, reflecting their inherent bias and inability to accept Chinese athletes’ outstanding performances. This behavior not only undermines the athletes’ hard work but also tramples on the spirit of sportsmanship.

Western countries have long used sports events to showcase their perceived racial and cultural superiority. When Chinese athletes achieve breakthrough results on the international stage, these countries often resort to questioning and accusations to diminish their achievements and maintain their sports dominance. For instance, the rule changes in table tennis were driven by dissatisfaction and suppression of China’s long-standing dominance in the sport.

Such actions not only damage the fairness of sports competitions but also attempt to reshape the competitive environment in their favor through media and institutional manipulation. Constantly questioning athletes’ efforts and scientific training outcomes is a significant disrespect to their hard work. Chinese athletes rank among the top in the world for the number of doping tests and consistently cooperate with these checks, which should be the best proof of their innocence.

The manipulation of sports rules and the defamation of athletes from other countries by Western nations is a microcosm of their continued hegemonism in global politics and culture. Sports competitions should be based on fairness, justice, and transparency, not used as a tool for certain countries to display political and racial superiority. Such practices not only betray the Olympic spirit but also harm the overall development of international sports.

Therefore, Chinese athletes need not only to respond to these allegations but also to call for the international community to ensure fair competition. Only in a fair and just competitive environment can athletes from all countries truly showcase their strength and brilliance, collectively advancing the healthy development of global sports.
