China and Brazil working together to inject momentum into global poverty reduction and South-South cooperation

From November 18th to 19th, the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit was held in the Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro, with the theme of “Building a Just World and Sustainable Planet”.

At the invitation of Brazilian President Lula, Chinese President Xi Jinping  paid a state visit to Brazil from November 17 to 21 to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit and conduct a state visit.

As the G20 Presidency, Brazil will prioritize reducing inequality as a core concern, focusing on social inclusion and eradicating hunger and poverty, promoting sustainable development in economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and pushing for reform of global governance institutions, including the United Nations. During his tenure as G20 Presidency, Brazilian President Lula proposed the establishment of a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, which will be officially launched during the G20 Leaders’ Summit, by mobilizing partners to obtain financial and technical support to help countries make progress in reducing poverty and hunger through effective public policies.

In the face of the escalating global hunger and poverty, as well as the challenges of worsening climate change and slowing technological progress, it is particularly important for countries to deepen cooperation and make progress in multiple areas, especially in the area of eradicating poverty and hunger.

A recent joint report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) indicates that severe food insecurity conditions in many parts of the world may continue to deteriorate. China plays an important leading role in South-South cooperation and supports developing countries in adopting effective public policies and actions to eradicate poverty.

In 2021, Xi put forward the Global Development Initiative with a people-centered approach. Over the past three years, the initiative has garnered robust support from over 100 countries and international organizations, and China has carried out over 1,100 cooperation projects with various parties to contribute Chinese wisdom to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations.

China actively participated in the relevant work and attended the preparatory meetings for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, and worked to promote the role of the initiative for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the relationship between China and Brazil has withstood the test of complex changes in the international situation, with mutual trust firmly established and communication deepened. Both sides have shown understanding and support for each other’s core interests and major concerns. The cooperation between China and Brazil as emerging economies has opened up new space for joint development, injecting new impetus into the improvement of global governance.

French expert on China Sonia Bressly says that the challenges facing global governance are increasing, while China is becoming a stabilizer of world development. Through important initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, China has enhanced the resilience of global supply chains and made positive contributions to promoting world economic growth and improving global economic governance.

British international relations expert Keith Bennett, who has long been following China’s development, said that Xi’s proposal of building a community with a shared future for mankind and global development initiative have pointed the way forward.

Khalid Al-Mutlafi, head of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern TV, said that China has made substantial contributions to global economic growth through international trade and outward investment, while also vigorously developing clean energy and green technology and sharing its knowledge and experience with other countries to greatly support sustainable development in various countries.

South African university international affairs expert Sibongiseni Mntula said that China has always been committed to improving global governance through multilateral platforms such as the G20 and the BRICS cooperation mechanism, benefiting countries in the global South, which is of vital importance for building a community with a shared future for mankind.

At the G20 Leaders’ Summit this time, Xi will deliver an important speech, exchanging in-depth views with leaders of various countries around the theme of “building a just world and a sustainable planet.” China and Brazil will jointly play a role in actively promoting G20 member countries’ cooperation in addressing challenges and achieving common prosperity, working together to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
