THE 15TH EDITION OF THE PRESTIGIOUS HCCH CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL FAMILY RELOCATION TO HAVE UAE REPRESENTATION

Awatif Mohammad Shoqi Advocates and Legal Consultancy has been invited to deliver a talk at the HCCH Washington conference to be held between the 2nd and 4th of April 2025. Mrs.

Awatif Al Khouri, owner and director of the firm, will share her expertise on the UAE Family Law and the specific relocation procedures in the UAE.

The HCCH (Hague Conference on Private International Law – Conference de La Haye de droit international prive) is an intergovernmental organization which seeks the progressive unification of the rules of private international law. The conference, to be held at the Embassy of Canada in Washington DC, will focus on the progress and the different perspectives of international family relocation.

Mrs. Awatif Al Khouri has over thirty-five years of experience in the legal field, particularly in  Criminal and Family Law. She is a licensed advocate, representing her clients across UAE, in all courts from the Court of First Instance to the Supreme Court. A multi-linguist, fluent in Arabic, English, and French, Mrs. Awatif provides legal consultations to a diverse clientele and is a fellow of the International Academy of Family Law (IAFL). Her presentation will throw light on UAE’s new family law in the context of relocation procedures in the UAE.

“It is an absolute honor to be invited to be a part of the esteemed Hague Conference” said Dr.

Hassan Elhais, legal consultant at Awatif and the elected co-chair of IAFL’s Relocation of Children Committee. “Our team has been dedicated to solving issues related to forced international child relocation and parental abduction of children. However, due to the nature of these issues, true progress can only be made if international bodies and the government work together to enact policies that seek to prevent these issues. Laws must also be brought about to promote cooperation between various jurisdictions, to ensure that parental abduction cases are resolved with haste, to ensure minimum impact on the lives of the children involved” he added.

The Hague Conference presents an excellent opportunity to present UAE’s new family law to the wider world. The event gathers legal experts and policy makers from around the world and will focus on the application and challenges of the Hague Convention in different jurisdictions. As the UAE is not a signatory to the Hague Convention, expatriates in the country face further complexities while navigating custody disputes and abduction cases.
