Thailand, the land of smiles, has everything – from jungle treks and elephant encounters to cultural exploration, breathtaking beaches, and lively nightlife. But the adventure doesn’t stop there!  The country offers some of the best scuba diving adventures that are a must-add to your bucket list! From Koh Tao to Phi Phi Islands, dive into the best spots globally, witnessing diverse fish species and vibrant corals for an unforgettable experience.

Whether you’re dreaming of your next Thailand getaway or craving a scuba diving experience, this guide unveils the secrets and top destinations that should be at the forefront of your travel plans.

Tips For beginners who want to try scuba diving in Thailand

  1. Yes, you can dive! The Discover Scuba Diving program is tailored for beginners and offers a fully supervised day filled with adventure and fun to introduce you to the incredible underwater realm.
  2. Consider destinations like Koh Tao in Thailand for a comprehensive scuba diving certification. The certification typically takes around three days and allows you to dive to depths of 18 meters.
  3. Select Thailand’s best scuba diving school to ensure a perfect diving experience. Look for reputable schools with experienced instructors.
  4. Ensure you are medically fit to dive by checking and completing any required medical questionnaires. If you have any health concerns, contact the scuba diving school in Thailand in advance.
  5. Plan your travel wisely. After your last dive, wait for at least 18 to 24 hours before taking a flight to avoid potential health issues associated with flying after diving.
  6. Drink enough water to stay hydrated before the dive. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption a day before diving, as it can lead to dehydration.

BEST TIME TO DIVE IN THAILAND

Within the Gulf of Thailand, diving is available almost year-round. November is the beginning of the monsoon season, during which visibility drops and heavy rainstorms can occur, but by mid- to end-December, things typically have returned to normal. On the Andaman side, dive times are more limited. Some areas are only available to dive for part of the year (like the Similan and Koh Lanta). October – April is the best time to dive the Andaman Sea.

BEST PLACES FOR SCUBA DIVING IN THAILAND

  1. Koh Tao Diving

Koh Tao, celebrated as a premier diving haven, caters to beginners and experienced divers alike. Offering affordable diving courses, ideal conditions, and breathtaking dive sites, it stands out as the perfect entry point for scuba enthusiasts. This island gem shines as the ultimate destination for earning your dive certification. Furthermore, it has garnered international acclaim for those aspiring to become PADI professionals. With 25 dive sites around the island, accessible by a short boat ride, you’ll explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, turtles, barracudas, and fascinating macro creatures. And who knows? You might even encounter majestic whale sharks, adding extra awe to your underwater journey.

  1. Koh Phi Phi Diving

Koh PhiPhi dive sites promise encounters with intriguing marine life, including leopard sharks. The underwater landscape boasts stunning rock formations and vibrant corals, creating an immersive diving experience. For macro photography enthusiasts, Koh Phi Phi unfolds a world of seahorses and mantis shrimp. Meanwhile, those seeking encounters with larger marine species may be rewarded with whale sharks and manta ray sightings.

  1. Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe stands out as a less explored gem than its counterparts. The island’s low tourism impact ensures the preservation of its breathtaking coral reefs, offering divers an unparalleled encounter with some of Asia’s most exquisite soft corals. Nestled within the Tarutao National Marine Park, Koh Lipe welcomes scuba divers of all levels. The park’s protected waters harbor a rich marine ecosystem, providing opportunities to spot many tropical fish species, graceful turtles, and playful dolphins.

  1. Surin Islands

Nestled under the protective embrace of the UNESCO environmental program, the Surin Islands unveil a diving paradise that epitomizes natural beauty and marine conservation. These remote islands offer an exquisite underwater experience enriched by hard coral diversity, soft coral formations, and a thriving marine ecosystem. You can explore the Surin Islands’ underwater wonders with dive liveaboard expeditions, available from October to early May. This exclusive window allows enthusiasts to delve into the secrets of the Surin marine realm. During the remaining months, the Mu Ko Surin Marine National Park temporarily closes its doors to divers, ensuring its pristine marine environment is preserved.

  1. Similan islands

A liveaboard is the best way to explore the Similan Islands. Divers flock to the Similan Islands primarily for the breathtaking encounters with manta rays and whale sharks. Witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, creating awe-inspiring moments that linger in the memory. The islands also host a variety of shark species, adding to the allure of Similan’s underwater spectacle.

  1. Phuket

Explore the diverse depths of Phuket’s waters, featuring deep drop-offs, coral-covered pinnacles, and captivating wrecks. From big marvels like manta rays and whale sharks to more miniature wonders like harlequin shrimp, Phuket offers a range of marine encounters. Whether you seek day trips to local reefs or liveaboard adventures, Phuket caters to all preferences. It’s a welcoming destination for seasoned divers and beginners starting their underwater journey.
