For many Filipinos, a “clearance” is one of the most frequently requested documents. Whether applying for a job, setting up a small business, or preparing for travel, the requirement often comes down to two names: the NBI Clearance and the Police Clearance. They may appear similar, but in practice they serve different purposes.

What is NBI Clearance?

The NBI Clearance, issued by the National Bureau of Investigation, is essentially a nationwide background check. It verifies whether an individual has pending criminal cases anywhere in the Philippines. Because of its scope, it is widely accepted for employment, government transactions, financial applications, and even visa processing.

Think of it as a certificate of good conduct on a national scale. Employers often prefer it over other documents because it covers the entire country and is viewed as more comprehensive. In short, if you want a clearance that opens doors in almost any institution, the NBI Clearance is the one.

To get clearance from NBI, you need to make NBI appointment online and then go to the dedicated offices with two physical IDs and get yourself cleared.

What is Police Clearance?

A Police Clearance works differently. Issued by the Philippine National Police through your local station, it certifies that you have no pending cases within your city or municipality. It is narrower in scope compared to the NBI Clearance, but still widely used for everyday needs.

This document is usually required for local employment, barangay permits, business registrations, and other community-level applications. Many people obtain it because it is faster to process and costs less. While it does not carry the same nationwide weight as the NBI Clearance, it is often all that is needed for local purposes.

Similar to NBI Clerance, you can apply for Police clearance online. This makes the whole process very simple.

Key Differences

The differences between the two become clear when you look at their coverage and authority. A Police Clearance checks your record locally, while an NBI Clearance checks it across the country. The former comes from the Philippine National Police, the latter from the NBI, which has access to broader databases.

Both are valid for six months to a year depending on the requesting office, but the NBI Clearance typically carries more weight in national and international transactions. This is why overseas employers, banks, and government agencies almost always ask for it, while Police Clearance remains common for smaller, local requirements.

Do You Really Need Both?

The question many people ask is whether they should get both documents. The answer depends on what you are applying for. If you are only after a local job or a small business permit, the Police Clearance is often enough. If you are seeking work abroad, applying for a loan, or joining government service, the NBI Clearance is non-negotiable.

Some employers and institutions require both to be extra sure. This might feel redundant, but it assures them that you are clear both locally and nationally. If you want to cover all bases—particularly for sensitive jobs or opportunities involving money and security—having both can give you an edge.

Why These Documents are Important

With fraud, identity theft, and recruitment scams still a concern, clearances serve as part of the country’s trust and verification system. They protect not just employers and institutions but also individuals, ensuring that records are checked before opportunities are given.

So, do you really need both? For everyday community needs, a Police Clearance usually suffices. For nationwide or overseas requirements, the NBI Clearance is essential. And if you want to leave no room for doubt, presenting both provides maximum credibility.
