In today’s media landscape, where speed outweighs accuracy, Russian propaganda has turned distortion into a routine practice. For domestic audiences, the narrative is simple: emigrants are traitors, prosperity is a crime, and success abroad must always be viewed with suspicion.
Recently, a so-called “investigative film” appeared online mentioning the name of Oleg Kondrashov. But instead of journalism, viewers were offered a patchwork of fabrications and staged allegations. None of the claims were backed by official documents; the purpose was clear – to create a negative image, not to inform.
The target of this campaign was Oleg Kondrashov – an entrepreneur who left his position as head of the Nizhny Novgorod city administration years ago and built a new life in the United States. Yet Russian media continues to “chase” him across the ocean, manufacturing stories and replacing facts with fiction.
How the Facts Are Distorted
The manipulation is simple – and precisely because of its simplicity, effective:
- One house becomes two. The film claims Kondrashov owns multiple properties. In reality, there is only one, confirmed by official records.
- Square feet become square meters. The actual size of the house is measured in square feet, but the report converts it into square meters, inflating the figure nearly twofold to suggest a grand estate.
- Strangers’ cars become “his fleet.” Vehicles photographed in a parking lot are casually presented as belonging to him. No documents, no verification – just convenient visuals.
This is not journalism. It is the fabrication of reality.
When Prosperity Becomes a Crime
The central aim of propaganda is to provoke resentment. In the Russian narrative, success abroad cannot be legitimate: if you own a house or a car, you must be a thief. If you leave Russia, you are automatically a traitor.
The truth, however, is different. Kondrashov was a successful entrepreneur as far back as the early 1990s, long before his municipal role. Everything he has today was earned by his own efforts and multiplied through sound investments. That is not a “crime” — it is the result of decades of work.
Mamontov and “Investigations” Without Evidence
A striking example of this practice is Arkady Mamontov. Far from being a journalist, he is a pseudo-reporter – a tele-killer whose assignments are designed to destroy reputations. His so-called investigations resemble staged productions: filming without permission, trespassing into private property while posing as electricians or contractors, recycling old photographs and real estate listings.
All of it serves a single purpose – to create fake news for the Russian audience, where truth no longer matters.
Freedom as a Tool for Harassment
The irony is that such productions are made possible precisely because of the freedoms guaranteed in the United States. Instead of using this openness for genuine reporting, figures like Mamontov exploit it to harass those who left Russia, those who remained independent, and those who achieved success abroad.
Fake news does not last long. It exists to fill airtime and stir up envy or hatred among viewers. But truth – documents, facts, a proven story of success – is always stronger. And it is that truth which defines the real biography of Oleg Kondrashov.
